No Impact Week

noimpactweekAs the number of people living on our planet continues to grow, it is increasingly important to be aware of the impact that we human beings have on our environment.  Most days, sustainability is probably one of the furthest things from our minds, as we finish out the semester and figure out our summer plans.  But this week, the Center for Sustainability (along with the University Wellness Program), has created an entire week filled with sustainable events…No Impact Week! For each day of the week, we will focus on a different aspect of environmental wellness.  Check out the schedule and see which events you can go to! Here are the themes for this year:

Monday – Trash

Tuesday – Food

Wednesday – Water

Thursday – Transportation

Friday – Energy

Saturday – Giving Back

We citizens of Eagle Nation are not environmentally unaware – we have several LEED buildings, a recycling program, and a Center for Sustainability. In addition, Georgia Southern University boasts the longest-running No Impact Week program in the country. The concept of No Impact Week began with a man named Colin Beavan, who lived completely without impacting the environment for an entire year in 2009. This week, we are bringing campus awareness to how we affect the environment. No Impact Week is a great place to start, but we need to make less of an impact year-round.
