SOS Week 2016

SOS Logo

Stomp Out Stigma Week is quickly approaching! Our annual mental health awareness week is as strong as ever with a lineup of events that will be sure to make an impact on the Eagle Nation.  According to the Center for Disease Control, suicide is the second leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 34.  While college can be an exciting time for any student, it isn’t a surprise to hear about the stressful experiences that we all face as a result.  In fact, almost one in three college students will experience a mental illness while in school. Unfortunately, few of those students will ever seek help due to a number of factors, including fear of judgment from others.

Stomp Out Stigma Week is designed to spark conversation around mental health on our campus.  We may not have the choice of experiencing a mental illness, but we do have the choice of how we perceive mental illnesses and how to treat those who may live with one. Check out the list of events below to learn more about how YOU can stomp out the stigma associated with mental health and encourage others to join the fight.

SOS Week Kick-off | Rotunda | 11AM – 1PM

Come and join us for the kick-off event for SOS Week at the Russell Union! Students will have the chance to sign a pledge to battle stigma towards mental health, interact with Health Services at their life-sized stress relief activity, and meet our counselors and learn more about services offered at the Counseling Center. There will be games, giveaways, music, and more!

SOS Week Speaker: Dennis Gillan | RU Ballroom | Doors close at 7PM

Three brothers, two suicides, and one story – our speaker, Dennis Gillan, is an ordinary guy with an extraordinary story of perseverance & recovery. Attendance verification will be available at the end of the program.

Day of Silence | Campus-Wide | All Day

Did you know 1100 college students are lost each year to suicide? Wear a button pledging to represent one of those 1100 students to raise awareness about this preventable death. Buttons will be distributed at the kickoff and speaker event on Monday. Students wearing the buttons should pledge to be silent for the day during extracurricular activities.
